Mac OS X is a ready to use Operating System that needs little or nothing else other than some exploring.  We have been using Mac’s for several years now and have our own list of programs that we use for many tasks, but the average everyday user won’t need much more than they already provide.  We will outline the “basics”, plus what we use to fill our everyday needs.

On October 14th, Apple refreshed its line of notebooks yet again.  The year they made significant changes in manufacturing and power consumption.  With new LED backlit displays that save 30% energy, dual video in the higher end MacBook pros, and Nvidia graphics chipset in all new MacBooks.  The dual video card system will encompass a Nvidia 9400M and 9600M GT; this system will use the 9400M for everyday tasks, and tap the 9600M for the higher scale graphics rendering when needed.  It is noted that the use of the 9600 M alone will reduce battery power by 1 hour when in use.
Along with the hardware decisions, apple has changed it case design to make its manufacturing more efficient and even added a glass touchpad that resembles the iTouch/iPhone.  The touch pad does not have a button as the surface is clickable like the iTouch/iPhone and will encompass new functions using multiple fingers to accomplish desired tasks.  The case design is carved from a single piece of aluminum, so as to, result in lighter, more rigid notebook frames than building them the old way with multiple parts.

There are several options out there for cloning your hard drive.  Most of them must be paid for, however we found one that was free and actually worked great.  Carbon Copy Cloner is a great free utility that will clone your current drive onto your new hard drive if you are upgrading or replacing.  This utility is made by a very knowledgeable Apple Systems Engineer, Mike Bombich.  Thanks for your hard work Mike.

Please note, this entire process will run approximately 3 hours depending on speed of Mac and how much information is on your drives.  In order to ensure a smooth process, it is highly recommended that you do not engage in other work while it is cloning drives.

We have used this software 3 times in our computing environment with great success.  This software is so simple that we are gong to guide you from installation to backup in less than 5 minutes depending on Internet connection speeds.

Items Needed:

    - USB to IDE/SATA Adapter ( link )
    - New Hard Drive
    - Carbon Copy Cleaner ( download )

From Bombich’s website, click to download the program Carbon Copy Cleaner.

Once the program has downloaded, you can go to the download window and click open if you are using Firefox.  If you are using Safari they have a download window as well or you can simply go to the Desktop or the Downloads folder to look for the dmg file.  Firefox on our Mac is set to download directly to the desktop.

Please note: you should have a clean, non-obtrusive work environment when doing this.  Also note that replacing the hard drive on your MacBook Pro can and may ultimately result in forfeiture of the warranty that is provided by Apple.  Performing the following is done at your own risk.

The following work was done on a MacBook Pro 17', model is MacBookPro3,1 .

Tools Needed:

        -   Torx screwdriver - T-6 size ( link )

        -   Phillips #00 Screwdriver ( link )

        -   Rosewill Anti-Static wrist strap ( link ,  read here to learn more about grounding oneself )

We recommend the kit featured in the links above.  If you have a Home Depot ( Store Locater ) near you we know they carry them, it’s where we purchased this one.  It has served us well when working on everything from laptops to cell phones.  You should also have a generic tool kit that includes the basic tools.

Task:

Replacing original MacBook Pro 160 GB hard drive with Western Digital 320GB ( 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s ).  We (me in particular) needed more space for music, personal work and Oscot development.  We run XP, Vista, and Ubuntu through VMware Fusion here, we’ll eventually give everyone a peek at what this machine actually goes through daily. ;)

In order to right click on a Mac you must hold down the ctrl button and the button on the mouse pad or your single click mouse.  You can utilize most two-button mice with Mac’s, just check for compatibility on the vendor box.  Below are some examples of index menus one can expect when right clicking on certain areas of your Mac.
