| Vista has lots of visual effects that make it aesthetically pleasing. Here we teach you how to turn those off and enable your memory to be freed up for more intensive work. On this laptop this exercise was done to speed up the machine, instead of having all the bells and whistles slowing down your computer. |
| After all is said and done, these effects are pretty to look at, but this machine needs to work as efficiently as possible. We used this method in Windows XP in home environments on PC’s with smaller RAM amounts of memory and found significant boosts in performance. In order to access these settings we need to get to the System Properties screen. |
There are three ways to access the System Properties in Windows Vista:

| If you click on the “Settings” within the Performance section of the window it will bring you to another window. There you can alter visual effects, processor scheduling, virtual memory, and data execution prevention. |
Visual Effects will allow you to alter all of Vista’s visual options to regain more of its raw power for when your applications need it most. Initially all of the check boxes are checked enabling all of the visual cues within Vista. In order to slow Windows role on your hardware, choose the “Custom” radial and check off the following ONLY:

| This will change the way Vista looks and feels and there are some option you may really like and want to keep. It’s as simple as checking them off to re-enable them again. |
| This will make Vista look similar to Windows 2000. However the largest beneit to this is the speed and stability you will get from Windows just from this simple task. Remember, we are here to make the most of our resources, but if you don’t like the way it looks and operates now, simply return it to the default radial. |
