We have updated this article to relect the market position when Google Chrome came out, and a direct speed comparison between all of the browers. Read about it here .
The year is coming to a close and there were significant events within web browsers and operating systems. This year we had Microsoft’s IE 7, Firefox, and Safari ( Apple’s new multi platform browser ). Apple’s Safari web browser is a great product, but is entering a tough market. It seems as though as Vista was pushed onto new pc’s across the country IE 7’s popularity began to rise from a 13.3% low in January to 21.0% in November. Firefox has been on a much steadier incline gaining on it’s current position within the market from 31.0% to 36.3& respectively.
Microsoft has shook up the industry by promising what is known as IE 8. From our experiences at Oscot, we know IE to generally be slower than it’s Firefox counterpart and more buggy. Unfortunately it’s still I vital element in Windows stability, and until that changes, it’s performance will continue to suffer. Although in a side by side comparison, neither, Firefox or IE can hold a candle to Safari’s amazing speed. Look for Safari to catch on as Apple begins to expand it’s domain into Microsoft terrain.
Operating system wars have heated up as Microsoft pushed Vista into the market on new pc’s and through individual sales. Vista was highly publicized and also highly criticized. While we haven’t had the opportunity to fully divulge into Vista, the time will be soon and we will be able to better report on it’s faults and praises. Apple, also released its highly anticipated Leopard operating system in 2007. I use an Apple daily and have been using Leopard since it’s release and an pretty satisfied with the system thus far, and am finding it very user friendly. Look for the write-ups following both operating systems in the first quarter of 2008.
As a matter of statistics, there is no competition for Microsoft who holds a 72.8% market share with XP, and 6.3% with Vista. Apple’s reach is a mere 3.9% in the market at the present time. Although their popularity has been gaining and their amazing accessories have been leading to sales of their desktop and laptop computers. With the market beginning to crowd this year with Ubuntu Linux and gOS it will be interesting to see how Microsoft will react in the future to the amazing features that are starting to become standard in the operating system market.
*edit - Please note that statistics used in this writing are not from sales, but from actual computers on the internet.
