Mozilla Firefox did it again, staying ahead of Microsoft in the home user browser wars, in particuliar, enhancing the managment of bookmarks. Mozilla really looked outside of the box, as usual, as bookmarks are controlled and organized through its own integrated section of the browser called the "Library". At first glance all seems the same, however unlike the other browsers: Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer that still utilize the filesystem to manage and control bookmarks/favorites. Firefox utilizes the power of JSON(JavaScript Object Notation) and a local integrated database, SQLite. Using a DB and the light yet powerful JSON dataset, this enters undiscovered territories in the web browser world. Some of these new features can be seen and accessed within the Library. Not to go off topic, but Firefox received 8 million downloads in a 24 hour period, with this, it inserted itself into the Guiness Book of World Records for the most downloads in 1 day. However, Firefox is restricted by a protective patent held by Microsoft in utilizing Visual Basic in webpages. This restriction will continue to be a large issue for Firefox as corporations and businesses primarily develop in Microsoft languages. The example that corporations are setting to the general non technical population is that Microsoft products are better. This one hurdle is what "holds back" Firefox as being the most reputable web browser. Enough talk on the only problem Firefox has, lets discuss on why it totally rocks. The Library To access the library you can do it in one of two ways. Shortcut key --> Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows) Shortcut key --> UpArrow+Apple+B (Apple) Click --> Bookmarks --> "Organize Bookmarks" Once in the library, you will have options to: Backup your bookmarks (export to JSON file or HTML) Restore from a file(import from a JSON file or HTML) Restore from a previous day (default is 5 days) These options make it extremely easy to share and transport your bookmarks from machine to machine. Additionally, the export to HTML, which was a carry over from previous versions, is great if you have a personal website and want to have your bookmarks available across the internet from various machines. For some people that haven't heard of JSON, its more or less the a 'super' dataset that is fast, lightweight and portable. For the non technical people, this evolving technology is super cool. New software and web developments are choosing this over XML as a choice of holding data. This can be seen first hand in many Google Map/Earth AJAX Based website applications. You will also have many options to sort each book mark on: ability to view last visit date Visit Count Most Visited Description Date Added Last Modified How to add a bookmarkAdding bookmarks (aka Favorites) is still performed the same easy way as in prior versions. When saving a bookmark you'll be presented to: Name the bookmark Select or Create a new folder to store the bookmark Place 'tags' separated by commas Here are the three ways to bookmark a site that your currently at: Within Firefox's menu, Click --> Bookmarks --> 'Bookmark this page' Keyboard shortcut --> ctrl+d right click --> select 'Bookmark this page' Tags, mentioned above, is a new option that will allow for better organization as well as to label the content in your own words. If this page was found in a result of a search engine search, a good idea is to use the keywords you searched on as the tags. Tag Examples: Personal Business Finance Windows Apple Linux Programming Tutorials Videos As you add new tags, automatically these new tags will be added to window where you can check/select the relevant tag to new bookmarks. This new feature is just one of the many features that the backend DB empowers us to do. Firefox is continuing improve in all areas of web browsing. With the JSON and the backend DB, stay tuned for some rocking plugins that the developer community will provide!

Please note: you should have a clean, non-obtrusive work environment when doing this. Also note that replacing the hard drive on your MacBook Pro can and may ultimately result in forfeiture of the warranty that is provided by Apple. Performing the following is done at your own risk. The following work was done on a MacBook Pro 17', model is MacBookPro3,1 . |
full size image here | Tools Needed: - Torx screwdriver - T-6 size ( link ) - Phillips #00 Screwdriver ( link ) - Rosewill Anti-Static wrist strap ( link , read here to learn more about grounding oneself ) We recommend the kit featured in the links above. If you have a Home Depot ( Store Locater ) near you we know they carry them, it’s where we purchased this one. It has served us well when working on everything from laptops to cell phones. You should also have a generic tool kit that includes the basic tools. | Task:
Replacing original MacBook Pro 160 GB hard drive with Western Digital 320GB ( 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s ). We (me in particular) needed more space for music, personal work and Oscot development. We run XP, Vista, and Ubuntu through VMware Fusion here, we’ll eventually give everyone a peek at what this machine actually goes through daily. ;) | |

In case you have lived under a rock for the past few weeks, you may have noticed an ad or two about Rockstar’s new blockbuster game, Grand Theft Auto IV. I mean if the NY Times is writing about a game, you know it’s serious. I personally am a fan of the series, my personal favorite being the Liberty City Stories release for the PSP what seems like not to long ago.
| However, Rockstar seems to have outdone themselves this time around, receiving perfect 10 scores from major gaming players such as IGN. The game is still sitting next to me at this very second opened but unscathed by my XBOX 360 drive, yet. The setting is New York City in all of it’s grime and glory. More to come once I get into the game and see what’s really going on in this highly acclaimed game.
| | | Till then, one of Rockstar’s testers was kind enough to provide our readers with the “Insider’s Guide to GTA IV”. Thanks Phil. | |
