Cloning Hard Drive – Mac OS X |
|
|
|
There are several options out there for cloning your hard drive. Most of them must be paid for, however we found one that was free and actually worked great. Carbon Copy Cloner is a great free utility that will clone your current drive onto your new hard drive if you are upgrading or replacing. This utility is made by a very knowledgeable Apple Systems Engineer, Mike Bombich. Thanks for your hard work Mike. Please note, this entire process will run approximately 3 hours depending on speed of Mac and how much information is on your drives. In order to ensure a smooth process, it is highly recommended that you do not engage in other work while it is cloning drives. | We have used this software 3 times in our computing environment with great success. This software is so simple that we are gong to guide you from installation to backup in less than 5 minutes depending on Internet connection speeds.
| Items Needed: - USB to IDE/SATA Adapter ( link ) - New Hard Drive - Carbon Copy Cleaner ( download )
From Bombich’s website, click to download the program Carbon Copy Cleaner. | full size image here | Once the program has downloaded, you can go to the download window and click open if you are using Firefox. If you are using Safari they have a download window as well or you can simply go to the Desktop or the Downloads folder to look for the dmg file. Firefox on our Mac is set to download directly to the desktop.
|
 | Once you have opened the dmg file and it has mounted in OS X you will be prompted with the following screen to drag the Application to the “Applications” folder.
| | Simply drag the Cabon Copy Cloner icon to the Applications folder in Finder. This will install the application there.
| | Upon running it your first time you will be prompted with a warning window advising you that this was downloaded from the Internet and asking if you if you are certain you want to open this. Simply click “Open”…
| | If you have not plugged in your new hard drive yet, now would be a good time to prep it and connect it to your Mac via the USB to IDE/SATA adapter. There could not be a easier more cut and dry interface to use for Carbon Copy Cloner. On the left you select what your source volume is, in this case that would be the hard drive present in the Mac currently. On the right you select the new drive that is now plugged into your Mac via the adapter. You also have a check box that provides the option to wipe the drive clean before copying over, always a good idea to use this feature.

Are you sure you want to continue with this operation.” This is simply letting you know the new hard drive is going to be wiped clean. Click Continue unless for some reason you got this far and decided against your goal. | | | Upon clicking Continue, Carbon Copy Cleaner will go to work and do what it knows best, replicate your hard drive onto another. Told you this was easy. |

If you found this as useful as I did, donate to the person that made this possible. Most programs out there cost upwards of $15 a license. Even a $5 donation is worth his effort. |
